College Park Community Food Bank
Role: Founding Board Member, Design & Comm Lead, Volunteer Coordinator
The Challenge: Founding Board member, establishing a food bank to reduce local hunger, in the wake of the 2008 economic crisis.
I served for over 8 years as the Volunteer Coordinator and lead for Design & Communications. The food bank continues to this day, serving 60,000+ people annually.
After starting the food bank, we rapidly adjusted our logistics for food distribution based on client needs.
High-impact iterations:
We went from encouraging pre-registration, to day-of registration, and eventually substantially reduced the info needed to register.
Many recipients were eager to pitch in while they were there. We strengthened relationships by making it easy for people to get involved in the distribution days as well as receive assistance.
I provided all types of design and communication support ranging from promotional print pieces, online needs, and day-of forms and signage. I delivered top to bottom work on the website including information architecture, content writing, design & build out.
Results:
Our first distribution served 13 families. We quickly grew to serving hundreds of people each month. Operations eventually scaled from monthly to bi-monthly.
After my tenure, the pandemic crisis presented another period of sudden need and the food bank again grew to meet the challenge by offering weekly distributions. Operations continue weekly, serving 60,000+ people each year.
